We use term to communicate and express ideas. But such terms are not expressed as single disparate words or phrases. They must be related to others to form and be expressed in the form of statements, we commonly refer to such statements as sentences. We may do so by means of questions (examples: are logicians….?) or in the form of exclamation (Oh, these mad logicians!) or further still, commands (Get out, you mad logicians).
Lastly we can use what we call propositions (All logicians are mad people). It is this last category of statements that shall interest us here. We shall examine its nature and characteristics and then see how it is different from the others. We shall derive other classes of statements from it and then look at many other aspects related to it.
At the end of this lessons, students should be able to;
– Determine what a proposition is and differentiate it with other types of statements
– Translate ordinary statements into standard form categorical proposition
– Represent a proposition both in diagrams and by the use of symbols
– Bring out the essential characteristics of a proposition and the various types of propositions
